Each time you try to slow down or stop your car, you may have noticed a weird noise coming from the brakes. If so, the cause of the sound could indicate what the problem is with your vehicle's braking system. Below are three potential causes for the strange sounds your brakes are making, as well as what may need to be done about them.

Squealing and Tight Brake Pads

If the noise you are hearing sounds like a high-pitch squeal, a possible cause is that the brake pads are rubbing too hard on the rotors. If this is the case, the calipers have likely been set too tight, applying too much pressure when the brakes are applied.

If this is the issue, the calipers will need to be readjusted to loosen up. If not, the pads will wear down too fast. This will make it necessary to have them replaced more often. And, if they are not replaced, the pads may wear down to the point where the metal underneath will start scraping the rotors.

Screeching and Worn Pads

Whether from pads that are pushing too hard on the rotors or from regular wear, the sound of screeching is often a result of worn pads. As the pads wear down, the underlying metal starts showing through. As the metal from the pads glide along the rotors when you apply the brakes, the resulting noise is a loud, grating screech.

If you are hearing this sound, the pads will need to be replaced. Also, the brake specialist will also need to examine the rotors to make sure no scratching has occurred on their surfaces. If so, the rotors may need to be sanded down or replaced, depending on the extent of the damage.

Grinding and Metal Touching Metal

If you hear a grinding sound when you step on the brakes, this probably means that your brake pads are completely worn down. If they have reached this point, the metal has started gouging the surface of the rotors.

If this is the case, both the pads and rotors will need to be replaced. Your braking system is no longer capable of consistently stopping your vehicle and needs to be taken care of before you can safely drive it.
